But Newcastle were never in financial difficulty. Their problem was the owner was going to make a shed load of loss on the deal if he sold at a lower price, and he wasn't prepared to throw good money after bad - even if he had the cash to do so.

There was a lot of talk of players on exceptionally high wages with no clause to reduce them. Even with parachute money that could have been bad for them. It's certainly not in the same league as the financial problems Pompey have though...
