World Cup 2014

OK, it's a bit early to be thinking about this but, with the current generation of established England players (Lampard, Gerrard, Barry, Ferdinand, Terry etc etc) approaching or about to pass 30, we'll soon see them making way for the next 'golden generation' of Englands best.

I think a few of them will still be involved through the 2012 Euro's and then into the WC 2014, but who is there coming through to replace them? Who's going to be the next Lampard and who's going to be the next Lee Sharp?

My starter for 10 is Lee Cattermole. I have a sneeking feeling he might turn into a really good midfield destroyer in the next 2 or 3 years and I can see him being involved.

I've not seen anything of the lad Smalling, but if Fergie is willing to shell out £10m for him after just a handful of Premier League games I'd hazard a guess that he'll be a decent player.

I'm still not convinced that Lennon will ever fulfil his potential, so I won't be surprised if he slips by the wayside.

Who else is out there that will be in or around the squad in 4 years time?

Think Rodwell will be the next 'big star'.

Really think he has the makings of a top player. Strong, big, quick, good footballer with an eye for goal

Agree on Hart and Rodwell, I think he looks a great prospect.

The only thing with Rodwell is when will he find a position and stick to it. He'd played all his age group games at centre half apparently but has broken into first team football as a midfielder. That's not too surprising though as centre half is a lot of responsibility, especially for that kind of ball playing defender. He has looked really comfortable in midfield though, perhaps too good to play at the back? Ferdinand had a similar start to his career didn't he?

Richards had the same problem and probably hasn't developed because of it (that and a bit of big time charlie syndrome).

I drew up a list in my head, and one that looks set to be involved soon and could be another big player Adam Johnson.

Its an outside bet.......he's only 20, if he's in the championship next season and bangs the goals in then i can see a Prem club coming in for him.

Look at how Doyle has made it from a nobody to a Irish international (ok i know its Ireland but i reckon he could still do a job for England if he was English)

I wouldn't put it past him TBM, and like you say he's got 4 years to prove himself and if he can consistently score goals he'll be in demand.

At the moment I can't think of many young forwards who look like they could be the ready made foil for Rooney over the next 6 to 8 years, which is basically what we need. The only one I can think of who looks like he might be up to it is Daniel Sturridge...at the moment, there will be a few that appear on the scene in the next year or so of course.

I remember when Rodwell 1st broke through, people saying Moyes saw him as a centre half long term but for the reasons you said was starting him out in midfield. I do think he seems to have grown into the role. Appeares to have a Gerrand esq roaming ability.

Richards is an odd one, thought he was one of the few positives to come out of the McClaren reign, putting in some good performances at right back. Just seems to have totally lost his way, both at international and club level. Cappello doesn't appear to rate him highly.


Oh and whisper it, but I've seen Jordan Obitta a couple of times now and he looks ridiculously good....

Back in the real world...I can't see Vaughan, Welbeck or Gosling being quite good enough to be honest.

Vaughan would be the one of those I'd say is the most interesting though. He has all the right attributes but doesn't seem to score enough goals in his limited football so far. Could see him being a Heskey for the '10s though so maybe.

Gibbs looks like the only young left back coming through, apart from Bertrand who is a long way off, and I can't see them being up to it either. Neither are anywhere near the standard Cole was at the same age.

I think he's already progressed through and so isn't one who's going to come through replace one of the existing generation...

He should be a fixture in the side for the next 2 world cups though.

Rooney and Milner look good for years to come, and there seem to be a few good players at Everton and scattered around the premiership. We are not going to match Brazil in any future versions of le Tournoi though - 2010 is out last chance to win something for a while.
