56 supporters lost their lives when they went to football to anjoy a promotion party. Very sad.

RIP.

Also, it's a shame to see such a nice stadium (or at leat 3/4's of it are nice) languishing in League 2. That club has had some tough times in recent years, mostly brought on buy poor ownership and risking their future for a stint in the Premiership. They're due a change of fortune!

What gets me is melancholy commentary over the top "That poor man came to watch the football and is now on fire", and the chants of city we love you that echo around the ground.

I remember watching this live on TV. Absolutely horrific to watch people dying before your eyes. The only event that came close for me in sheer incredulious horror is 9/11.

Sad and shocking scenes that must haunt a lot of people to this day, and just a week or so until Heysel too.

As much as I yearn for the old days of watching football at times, this brings home how much safer watching the game is these days and how unlikely it is that either tragedy would happen today.

I remember it well - weren't we there just the week before?

When I did fire marshal training they showed us the film of it to illustrate just how quickly fire spreads. It starts with a few wisps of smoke and people standing around laughing and joking - and then just a couple of minutes later the fire is spreading along the stand quicker than a man can run.

I only watched the video recently, only having ever just heard about it (since I was one year old in 1985) and was utterly shocked at how quickly it spread. Horrible

There might be a lot of unpopular and in some cases over the top safety improvements, but the end of wooden stands is certainly not one of them (though you could argue with all stadiums being no smoking it would be a lot less likely to happen anyway)

Whenever we queue to get out of any football stadium, it always makes me wonder how long it would take to evacuate if something similar happened now. I assume that it couldn't happen again because safety standards are better now and lessons have been learnt, but I'm only assuming that.

The queues at the end of a game are exacerbated by the knob faces who stand in the fecking tunnels to the concourses for the last ten minutes of a game and by the knob faces who insist on waiting for their friends at the bottom of the stairs, instead of outside the ground up against the wall.

Phrased badly by myself, I meant I had only ever read reports until recently when I saw the video. Known about it for a number of years though I wouldnt be surprised if some hadnt - it gets virtually no coverage compared to Hillsborough when both were as tragic as one another

The shame of it all is that many died on the area surrounding the fire exits. Locked fire exits as explained were the main reason many died. I had to sit and watch that full video unfold in a fire safety course at work. It's still such a sobering thought. Poor souls.
