I doubt they will want to draw seeing as a draw means Serbia can overtake them with a win against the Aussies and thus knock the Germans out.

Jozy Altidore is thicker than a pile of Haitian pigshit, and it was on full display today

An absolute knucklehead, but they must've been passing the good stuff around media row pre-match, because he's winning praises from multiple quarters nonetheless; I OTOH spent the latter 55 minutes of the match giving him an absolute rodgering-by-keyboard in my commentary feed that provided endless amusement in at least two doctors' offices where folks were looking on

Anywas*, should've won 3-0 or even better --Algeria are worthy but just weren't at the races today and ripe for a battering-- but we couldn't piss and hit the side of an ad hoarding from two paces

Great way to go through, and it would have been robbery if they hadn't. Can we also have no more nonsense about "yanks don't even know this is going on". Downtown STL bars and restau's all open early for a widely advertised "Soccer Party" this morning, parking almost impossible to come by, and the bar I chose at 9 a.m. - by no stretch of the imagination a "soccer pub" - packed to the gills with an even mix of standard USA-type footie fans and besuited types clearly skiving off work. The noise when Donovan scored was like nothing I've ever heard before.

I was in a rage --for hours-- over the missed chances and woefully imprecise execution, and I would've given my level best to punch Altidore full in the face for that performance if I could've got near enough to him

Dempsey was plenty wasteful today too, but Clint's done more than enough in service to his national team, and in representing his country with distinction at the club level overseas, to earn a pass for the occasional and inevitable rough outing (that's what teammates are for, and just what the f*ck did they manage to get done in front of goal today?)

Altidore, for his own part, has earned precisely diddlysquat and needs to grow his ass up and get to work on his game --it's either that, or I don't want to see him in the shirt again

Looking at the run in to the finals I am seeing semi final spots for Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and quite possibly Chile - how's that for a clean sweep of SA teams. Given this a Chile v Uruguay final would be good.

It's certainly a possibility but I think Spain and the Dutch will have something to say about it, let alone the winner of us vs the Germans being able to give the Argies a good run for their money.

Now we're not in the USA/Uraguay path to the semi's is it OK to say it's the easiest looking run or would that still be seen as arrogant?

Definitely the path of least resistance. The longer the old guard stay around (Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Germany) the harder it is to get past them.

Not grasping the love for Chile as the tournament has unfolded

Yes, they're very good (and not just because they play their home matches at extreme altitude), and they mix it up with Brazil and Argentina as a matter of routine regional business --that I do get

But they beat a thoroughly overmatched if game Honduras side in their first match in Group H, and then they needed all of an hour and a half to take out a Swiss side reduced to ten men and which was playing for a draw from the off

Again, they're good --damned good, even; would it help if I were to shout it?-- but I'm on record elsewhere hereabouts in expressing my confident belief that Paraguay would do 'em, and I'd give the Uruguay side that I've seen over three matches at least an even shot, too

And of course those are all CONMEBOL nations
