Strap's Stats 4 - November 1997

Early Season / End Season Standings...

Right, an update as promised on the article comparing our final league standing against our situation after 5 Saturdays of a season. You may remember from an exercise I did looking at the last 3 seasons, that over 50% of all teams finish the season no higher or lower than 4 places from their position after only 5 Saturdays of the season. I was a mite peeved that as we were bottom after 5 Saturdays this year, that we’d be lucky to finish outside the relegation zone. BUT, as you all know I’m never one to let mere stats cloud my love affair with the Royals, (and no I’m not going to tell you why my wife divorced me), promising you conclusive proof that we are far from an average side when it comes to Houdini stuff!

First off, my mind wandered back to those halcyon days of Jack Mansell. We’d been dumped out of FAC1 at non-league Brentwood, stuffed out of sight 6-2 at Soutport, and were generally doomed at 18th in the league and sinking fast - when all o f a sudden, we went on a 15 match unbeaten bender that took us to the top of the table!!! And here I start to get really guilty - guess which match I chose to start my love affair with the Royals? Yep, you’ve guessed it, Luton at home, which should have b een unbeaten match number 16!! So it’s all my fault - if only I’d waited until 1970-71, we would doubtless have been riding high in old Div 2 and perhaps beyond!! - Sorry!

I think that this was the last year we recorded a 5 figure home league average attendance, but I stand to be correcxted.

As wonderful as that comeback record is, it is actually eclipsed by the exploits of Ronnie Blackman and his gang back in 51-52, which perhaps not surprisingly was the year we scored the most number of league goals in one season.

After a pretty good start, we soon fell away alarmingly, before Ronni and co. went on a bender of Robin Friday proportions, winning 19 out of 20 games, to finish 2nd. Sadly the 7 defeats in 9 games at the start of the season was just too muc h of a hurdle to overcome. And no, you can’t blame me this time, as I was all of minus 8 years old! Strangely enough, I think this was the last time we averaged over 15000 at home in a season. BTW, if anyone can supply the details for the 2 missing scorer s and the home attendance against Watford, I’d be very grateful.

The attendance figures are taken from classified sports pages, so may not be 100% accurate. Note even back in 51-52 the fickle nature of Reading fans! Over 16000 say Ronnie Blackman hit all 5 against Southend, but by the last game of the season, with p romotion not even mathematically possible, the crowd was down nearly 10000! I don’t know about you, but after watching Ronnie net 5 in a game, I’d have gone to all the final games possible!

And finally, spare a thought for Brighton. Just checkout the attendances at the Goldstone for our visits - 32036 and 23590! Not bad for 2 division 3 fixtures. I bet the powers at be there would give their eye teeth for a couple of crowds of that size this year!

If anyone can remember better comeback stories over a season, please feel free to drop me a line. I’ll dig out the necessary bits and pieces in a future update. All contributions will be gratefully acknowledged!
