Despite Reading’s dominance at Elland Road they stretched their winless run to four games after a frustrating goalless draw. The Royals would have felt confident coming into the game after they had won the last four corresponding fixtures but failed to break down a stubborn Leeds United who showed little attacking intent.

Nigel Adkins named the same team that started against Wolves on Sunday. The bench was strengthened further with Hal Robson-Kanu returning from injury.

Although Reading started strongly with plenty of attacking promise from Cox, Blackman and Murray overall the game played out like a flat yorkshire pudding; disappointing. Clear chances were far and few between, with only four shots on target for the Royals. Obita and Murray in particular failing to provide the spark that will be needed if Reading hope to push for a top six spot. Blackman showed potential with some smart touches and movement but appears to be lacking an end product. He had Reading’s best chances as he forced Silvestri into solid saves following shots in the 7th and 81st minute.

With Murray and Pearce failing to show the killer instinct to get on the end of a dangerous Oliver Norwood free kick in 71st minute Reading failed to carve out any other opportunities of note. Instead they will look back on some second half penalty claims knowing they could have provided the goal needed to win the tie.

Blackman was twice denied a penalty after tricky runs ended with apparent trips on the edge of the area in the 21st and 86th minute. Both maybe not given as Blackman looked to make the most from the challenges. The strongest shout came in the 69th minute as a forceful run by Taylor was abruptly stopped by the outstretched foot of a Leeds United defender.

Oliver Norwood once again dictated play from the middle of the park with his calm pass and move style. He is fast becoming the key to the tempo of Reading’s play and Royal’s fans will be excited with the thought of a Norwood and Danny Williams midfield pairing once the energetic American returns from his lengthy knee injury.

The Royals back four were rarely stretched with Federici forced into his only save of the game following the former Reading striker Billy Sharp’s low strike in the 84th minute. Although Hector tried his best at times to put Reading under pressure with some wayward clearances.

Guthrie replaced Akpan in the 70th minute and Robson-Kanu making his first league appearance of the season replaced Cox in the 74th minute. Mackie brought his party to the game by replacing the hard-working but ineffective Jake Taylor in the 76th minute. This result leaves Reading in 10th place, which seems a fair reflection on their standard of play so far this season. Whilst the overall play has been promising they appear to lack the guile, or at times the determination, needed to secure three points. This was demonstrated as the game went into injury time and Federici received a yellow card for timewasting.

Reading now go to Brentford hoping for a more fruitful return from a difficult fixture.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Opportunity for 3 points missed. Some comical defending towards the end almost gave away the match. Hector made some really bad mistakes mixed in with some really good defending, Obita much the same. Norwood looks a real class player and until Akpan went off the midfield worked quite well, his match ended by injury by the look of it. Guthrie added nothing when he came on.

Blackman could have been the real match winner but decision making about when to release the ball after skinning the left back could have been far better. Wants the glory I think. Leeds could have nicked it at the end but would have been unjust.

Decent game of football last night with Reading looking the better team but failing to get any killer pass in the final third despite having enough possession to do so. Leeds were reasonably good and the movement from the Italian centre forward gave us a few problems.
The Quiet Man

Broadly agree with the comments so far. Norwood and Akpan working well in tandem, Blackman easily the most likely to produce something, Cooper and Obita guilty of some moments of serious sloppiness in possession. Federici's distribution was poor too and nearly cost us a couple of times.

But we kept the ball well, by and large. There were probably a few times when we really needed to shift gears quicker to exploit an opportunity on the break, and sometimes we looked happier to allow Leeds time to regroup and play the ball around in front of them.

Mackie looked really off the pace when he came on, bundling gracelessly into the full-back on both occasions that he had possession in a decent spot. And sadly Murray had very little influence on the game. I thought HRK's cameo was promising. Given McCleary's situation and Mackie's form I'd have HRK back in the team as soon as possible, replacing Taylor who doesn't seem to produce much to me. Anyway, overall a pretty encouraging performance I'd say. Far more competent than against Wolves, just missing a little cutting edge.

Quotes from the Press

Energy and tempo. Both were there as Darko Milanic introduced himself to Elland Road but chances and finishes were missing on a goalless evening in Leeds.

Leeds United’s new head coach saw organisation and intensity flow through his team, just as he demanded, and in that respect will feel happier than he did after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Brentford. United were shaky at Griffin Park and rattled in the end but Milanic’s first league point was safely accrued last night.

Leeds and Reading tied each other in knots, equally lively between their respective boxes but no great threat beyond the 18-yard line. United have had that problem in spells of this season and after looking closely at his defence in the days after his arrival, Milanic might now shift his attention to the opposite end of the pitch....

Glenn Murray came closest to a winner with a second-half header which Marco Silvestri kicked off his line and much of the game belonged to Reading after the break but Leeds did not allow the contest to get out of hand, as they had against the Berkshire club last season...

Reading’s pace and movement was the basis of their strategy but Leeds were like-minded. Alex Mowatt pinged a shot over the visitors’ goal early on and Byram drag the ball wide after arriving to finish off a counter-attack. There was no appetite on either side for a goalless evening, even though it finished that way.
