Match Report

Reading
D Williams (73).
Charlton
No goals
Reading find themselves sitting in sixth place with a five point cushion after another weekend in which results went Reading's way. All the teams in the hunt for sixth place failed to win and Reading's amazing away form continued with another precious three points away at Charlton. Reading were winners by a single goal thanks to Danny Williams strike, created by Danny Guthrie, on 74 minutes. The Royals were the better side in an uneventful game and deserved yet another away win that makes it 16 points from a possible 18 away from the Madejski Stadium.

Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Ipswich all failed to win with only Brighton managing to collect a single point. The results see Bournemouth emerge as big play-off rivals for the Royals making Tuesday night's game at Bournemouth a real "six pointer". Another away win for Reading would effectively rule out Bournemouth from over-hauling Reading as the season enters the final straight. With six games of the season left to play a continuation of Reading's away form may be enough to carry Reading into the play-offs and a shot at promotion back to the Premier League.

League Position — 2013/2014

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

The first half was woeful, devoid of any entertainment and just two poor battling teams.

Second half we got better and started to run at their defence. Alf had the best chance but it was on his left foot and hit it wide, Hamer saved well from a Guthrie free kick, Pog hit a decent shot into the side netting, then Williams scored a peach of a goal.

Charlton were a pretty poor side but battled hard and had a lot of the game but no real goal threat, you can see why they struggle to score goals. We looked better with Guthrie and Williams back, with Williams my MOTM even before he scored.

Well that was a League 1 game in everything but name. You might expect that of Charlton who have one of the weakest squads in the division and have all the hallmarks of a team holidaying in the championship before eventually returning down a division. But what is our excuse? The only real difference between the teams was a very good goal from Williams. In particular, Id have to mention Guthrie, Pogrebnyak, Gunter and McLeary because these are all players bought by the club to play in the Premiership. So when an opportunity arrives to play a club full of players two levels lower than you, and you end up being just mediocre again, then you can only conclude that you are playing way below your ability. We may have won, and we may be cementing a play off place, but I'm still waking up bitterly disappointed.

As for the playoffs, I'm as stunned as anybody that its looking like we're going to end 6th; and I too have this half feeling that we might spawn the playoffs, but we must go into them as heavy outsiders based on this form.

Quotes from the Press

Adkins's side ... were always in control of this game. After a dreary first half, in which the only moments of note were when Charlton midfielder Jordan Cousins shot tamely at Alex McCarthy and Ben Hamer was forced to push away Chris Gunter's cross, the visitors took command.

Williams, Royston Drenthe and Adam Le Fondre all spurned opportunities after the break and Guthrie's fierce free kick was saved splendidly by Hamer. Reading's pressure deservedly yielded a goal in the 74th minute, though. Guthrie burst from midfield and perfectly delayed his ball to Williams, who rifled the ball into the top-left corner.

Nigel Adkins, Reading manager:
"We'll just focus on the six games left. You can see there's a spirit and a confidence about the players. We only lost one game in March so it's not like we've been losing games but there's been too many draws. If you give bad goals away like we have done, you won't win games of football - I think that's the top and bottom of it."
