Reading win 5-4 on penalties

Although it wasn't a perfect start to the new 2026/2027 season the Royals at least got the job done, coming through a penalty shootout 5-4 after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Bromley. The game got off to a bright start but Reading played their best football in the second half without being able to find the back of the net.

The penalty shootout saw Lewis Wing, Charlie Savage, Jack Marriott, Liam Fraser and Randell Williams all convert their penalties before goalkeeper Joel Pereira stepped up with the decisive moment, saving Bromley's spot-kick to secure a League Cup first round victory for Reading.

Reading took the lead after 14 minutes when Josh Stokes scored Reading's first goal of the season, after Kyreece Lisbie's cross was not properly cleared. However, Bromley made it 1-1 shortly after the half-hour mark. A through ball saw Michael Cheek score at the second attempt after his first effort was saved.

Reading struggled to turn their better possession into enough meaningful chances after half time but were at least lively down the wings. Lisbie had a header straight at the goalkeeper and then won a penalty which should have been the game's decisive moment, but Wing fired his penalty kick against the post.

Trying to be optimistic and hoping that the not overly inspiring start is just the new players getting used to each other. We've certainly played worse in recent times.

Was alright. More intensity and ambition than last season. Happy enough Badly need a new CF but we all know that

We have a very decent looking right side. Lisbie is a quick handful and Godwin-Malife looked to support well. The left hand side is still bloody awful, with largely nothing happening until Lane and Savage came on. It comes to something when you accept that Lane is a better left back than your supposed starting left back.

The RHS looks class but yeah the LHS was weak Leam doesn’t want to ever seem to take DK off which confuses me. Thought he was pretty poor today.

Improved 2nd half and that needs to be the minimum standard really. We really can't play like we did in the 1st half at all anymore, or we will struggle. Wingers looked good. Surprised how impressive Lisbie was.

Overall, I thought some of our movement looked decent enough, particularly in the first 15 mins of the first half. The attacking style looked quite threatening at times but lacked bite, ball retention, concentration, and final ball. A lot of that comes down to this being first game of the season and some players still getting up to speed. After the first hydration break and Paudie’s excellent block, our defending was poor and lacking communication, especially the bit leading to their goal. Pereira should have had that all day long regardless of what Paudie was doing. Dokes ran out of steam second half and some players looked too… More
