Life doesn't get any easier for former Reading manager Brian McDermott. Exactly a year after he was harshly kicked out of Reading Football Club he looks to have a very short future ahead of him at Leeds United. After already being very publicly dismissed as Leeds manager, only to be reinstated the next day, his side continue to slide down the league table on the back of heavy home defeats. There's plenty going on at the club outside McDermott's control in a situation that is much further up the turmoil scale than Reading FC's current lack of new owners. McDermott's days are numbered and it must be tough turning up and trying to get results. New Reading manager Nigel Adkins successfully turned McDermott's misfortune to his advantage with a big win at Elland Road on Tuesday night. Reading were 4-0 up at one point before eventually turning out 4-2 winners - and that came after a run that saw just one win in five games for the Royals.

After just two goals, and two points, in the last three games for the Royals, McDermott might have expected a better return from this fixture. Instead Reading started the scoring on 24 minutes and added three more with just 54 minutes on the clock. The home side pulled two back in a space of a minute on 63 minutes but could only succeed in making the scoreline look respectable instead of threatening to complete a comeback. McCleary opened the scoring to make it 1-0 to Reading at half time. Immediately after the break Drenthe, having scored his first Reading goal at the weekend, doubled his tally for the season with a great free kick. Two minutes later Guthrie provided the cross that saw Blackman head home. With 54 minutes gone Robson Kanu volleyed home to wrap up Reading's goal scoring for the night.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Must admit that the team selection had me mildly seething before the game, but tbf Nige got it spot on. The Wickham/McCormack duo would have been tough for Hector to handle and for the most part we looked very solid against them. Only when Smith came on did we look seriously troubled, but that was probably more to do with the fact they were playing 8 men up front by then. Hal did a really good job on his own up front as well, held it up well and offered a serious threat all game, unlike Alf who goes missing for 70% of the game.

Drenthe's revival continued with another sparkling performance. When he stepped over that free kick the whole away end knew what was about to happen. Great strike, and the team cuddle with NA was nice to see.

Obita MOTM again for me.

Not sure I can feel sorry for any manager that takes on a job like Leeds or Cardiff at the moment. They know exactly what they're getting into with clubs like that and, although things have obviously taken a turn for the worse at Leeds recently, but it's nothing that wasn't likely to happen at such a club.

More importantly that was a great result for us last night and even better that Drenthe is starting to find his feet. He's obviously had a few issues getting on the pitch but he's taking his chance and showing the talent that made us take the gamble on him. I'm a bit gutted he's not been involved more as he's one of the few players in our squad that make the game worth watching.

Great night out, Leeds weren't great at all for most of the game, beautiful free kick from Drenthe and we came out flying after half time, if Leeds hadn't come back into it it could easily have hit 7 or 8. What a horror show for our first goal from their defence though! Guthrie and Drenthe were the absolute stand outs for me.

Their two goals totally changed the game though, their fans were off their back and right behind them, they had all the momentum and we were rattled. Very much squeaky bum time after then. What a beauty of a goal their second was as well, McCarthy had no chance! Horrific their first though, our two defenders (can't remember which two!) or McCarthy really should've got something on it instead of having it fly past them.

Quotes from the Press

Basic errors, slapdash play and a general lack of backbone in the first hour contributed to Reading coasting to a four-goal lead and a situation that could not be retrieved despite an almighty effort.

Matt Smith and Rodolph Austin both scored inside a minute to create hope of what would have been a truly epic comeback.

Too much damage, however, had been done and as well as United finished the game, that cannot take away just how poor they had been in the opening hour.

‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ and ‘we’re s*** and we’re sick of it’ were just two of the chants as a distinctly unhappy Gelderd End made their feelings known in the wake of Hal Robson-Kanu firing in Reading’s fourth goal on 54 minutes.

On the touchline, McDermott cut a forlorn figure and there must have been a few in the 19,915 crowd, as the Royals ran amok, who wondered if they were witnessing the final act of his reign.
