Reading chalked up their second home win in four days with a late winner against a strong Millwall side. Millwall will feel, with some justification, they deserved better. They had more than their share of possession and created several good chances, but ultimately succumbed to a late goal from a corner.

The game was fast and open from the start and within the opening fifteen minutes both teams had good chances. Reading took two of theirs and Millwall were prevented from taking theirs by an acrobatic leap by Frederici. Reading took the lead through Cox after six minutes. Frederici launched a counter attack sending a long ball to the Reading striker. Cox used his skill and strength to get the better of two Millwall defenders before racing clear to beat Forde with an early strike from just outside the box. Reading should have increased their lead when Obita whipped in an excellent cross which Murray really should have converted. It was pretty much the story of his night as he failed to have the same impact as he did on Saturday. Cox on the other hand was like a man possessed and on fourteen minutes turned and beat his man brilliantly before feeding Blackman wide on the left. Blackman ran at the heart of the Millwall defence and his pace forced a Millwall defender into a rash challenge. Blackman was felled but was quickly up on his feet to grab the ball to take the penalty. With admirable confidence and composure he sent Forde the wrong way and rolled the ball into the corner of the net. Reading could not have wished for a better start.

Millwall were certainly not going to lie down and gradually mounted pressure on the Reading defence. Fuller was a particular threat. Gunther looked all at sea all evening and Millwall were getting past him with ease. Holloway made a tactical change bringing Woolford to play wide on the right and although Obita coped better with his defensive duties he hardly won a ball in the air all evening. Generally Reading were defending resolutely. Tackles and blocks were made at crucial times but eventually the pressure took its toll. Fuller was given too much room inside the box and he finished well. There was a scare on half time when hesitancy in the Reading defence gave Millwall a sniff of an equaliser but Federici juggled the ball and finally grasped it safely.

The points were clearly up for grabs and Millwall pressed hard for an equaliser in the second half which came when Federici and the Royal’s defence failed to deal with a looping cross to the far post. Federici missed the ball and Beevers was not marked adequately and was able to head home from close range. The game was now wide open. Reading worked hard and with Akpan and Norwood still a force in midfield the balance of play was restored. Norwood’s pass selection and execution were impeccable throughout. I can’t remember him conceding possession at any point in the game.

With time running out Gunther made a penetrating run before firing in a cross which was put away for a corner. Obita’s corner was flicked on for Cox to nod in the winner. Millwall were on their knees, devastated at conceding so late having clawed back two goal deficit. Millwall would feel they deserved a point but the home crowd were not concerned with justice. The Royals had three more points and moved into the top six.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Enjoyable game and carried on from where we left off on Saturday. A nervy 25 mins in the second half when Millwall passed us off the pitch, but 3 points is 3 points. Norwood again excellent with inch perfect passes out to Mackie.... Who again had no end product. We need GMac back to be more of a threat down the right.

Gunter is still getting caught out of position too often and has developed that cocky swagger. He needs to knucke down again. Akpan made 1 mistake too many tonight after his improved performance on Saturday. Williams alongside Norwood is a mouthwatering thought. Cox just gets better and his work rate was top notch mocing deep looking for the ball. The promising we've been in years.

Well, we were lucky to get away with that one. Looked good for the first twenty minutes, looked awful for the next 70. Very very poor defensively highlighted by Gunter being turned inside and out all night long. On the plus side it does make for some interesting games this season as we can, in patches, look very good going forward. I have to start by saying I didn't see Saturday's game so it seems to me that result and the performances that went with it seem to me very much down to the quality of opponent and the sending off.

I expected to see something more from Norwood, who does look like he can pick a pass and does move the ball around quickly, but seemed very much on a periphery of the game last night, I actually thought Akpan looked the more comfortable of the two. I also expected more from Murray, and although it was nice to see us winning a couple of the crosses, he didn't hold up the ball any better than Pog for me. For a big guy (not actually sure he's bigger than Pog!) he seemed to get bossed by their centre backs for most of the evening, although he does stay on his feet which is a bonus I guess. Blackman did ok, nice run for the goal and well taken penalty but didn't seem to get involved too much after. Wasn't as much of a willing runner as Taylor is. Mackie clearly pulled up early in the second half so I'm guessing he picked up a strain of some sort, but also didn't get involved enough for me. Cox was undoubtedly the star of the evening and Federici pulled off a few great saves and then ruined it by flapping about like Dumbo for their second goal.

We were very fortunate that Millwall were actually worse in defence than we were.

Quotes from the Press

MILLWALL let at least a point slip through their grasp when Reading scored from a late corner to win at the Madejski tonight.

The Lions had the hosts on the rack for the whole of the second half and looked ready to put them to the sword when the Royals scored from their only attack of the second half.

Nigel Adkins' team had surged into the lead, scoring through a sweet Simon Cox drive against the run of play in only the sixth minute.

Nick Blackman added a second just eight minutes later when he converted a spot-kick after being tripped in the area by Alan Dunne.

But Ricardo Fuller pulled one back five minutes before the break, slotting under Adam Federici after being fed by Scott Malone.

The visitors then turned the game almost on its head when Federici came for Martyn Woolford's free-kick, missed it, and Mark Beevers headed into an empty net.

Reading were reeling and had to absorb wave after wave of attacks - but with five minutes of normal time left, they burst down the right flank, won a corner, and Cox poked home the winner from a yard out.
